How Type & Hear using NGT Lite works
Using the Next Generation Text (NGT) Lite app running on your computer, tablet, or smartphone you type what you want to say on a phone call while using your phone to hear what the other person says.
NGT works by connecting you to a relay assistant who reads to the other person the words you've typed while you hear the other person speak.
If the other person has the NGT Lite app you'll be able to type direct to them and hear their reply without a relay assistant being connected into the call.
If the person you're talking to doesn't have a text device a relay assistants is automatically connected into your call. The relay assistant stays on the line throughout your call, or as long as they're needed. They relay the conversation by speaking your words to the other person, while you hear what the other person is saying.
The relay assistant only relays the conversation, they take no other part in the call. All calls handled by relay assistants are private and confidential. The emergency services, many government departments, banks and building societies use our services. Personal, sensitive and confidential information is relayed securely.
Direct text conversations
It could be that due to the nature of your phone conversation you don't want a relay assistant involved or that you'd rather talk direct to someone who also uses text. If this is the case you can still use the NGT Service.
As long as the other person has downloaded and installed the free NGT Lite app or is using a textphone you can have a direct text conversation without a relay assistant.
NGT automatic changes the way it sets up your phone call depending on the device the other person is using, you don't need to do anything different when making your call. If you both have text devices you'll see NGT Connected text to text when your call is answered.
Important notes when having a direct text conversation:
- Without a relay assistant NGT can't convert speech to text or text to speech. If the other person can't speak you'll have to read their typed conversation.
- If the other person is using a textphone and can speak there'll be a delay between you typing "GA" and you hearing their reply.
