Using NGT Lite with other phones

Currently you need to have an Android device, iPad, iPhone, or computer to use NGT. We are looking at increasing the number of devices we support and will put information on this website when it's available.

Setting up

When you've linked NGT Lite to a phone number open Options and select the Text Relay tab.

There are three options to choose from:

  1. I'll be typing and hearing (Speech impaired)
  2. I'll be typing and reading (Text user)
  3. I'll be speaking and reading (VCO – also allows Text)

Please note that selecting option 1 mutes the phone line, and you will not be able to speak to the relay or other person.

The NGT Lite app is now ready to make calls using the linked number. If you need more information about setting up the NGT Lite app please click here.

Setup information for users of Braille devices

The NGT Lite app has been tested on Windows PC using the JAWS and NVDA screen readers.

Java Access Bridge

You must enable the Java Access Bridge before it will work with the NGT Lite app. Once you have installed NGT Lite and Java enable Java Access Bridge on a 7 Windows computer as follows:

  1. Press WINDOWS + U to open the Ease of Access Center dialog box
  2. Choose "Use the computer without a display" and then scroll down to Java Access Bridge and enable the checkbox

If the Java Access Bridge is not enabled your screen reader will just report the NGT Lite app interface as "unknown" or "no focus".

Slowing down the text

NGT sends the text at the speed the relay assistant types. However you can slow it down at any time by typing (slow) as if it were part of your conversation.

Speak&Read - two handled braille

As you know when using NGT you can speak at the same time as reading text. Of course if you use both hands on your Braille device this means that you need to pick up and put down the telephone handset. Using a telephone with a headset can make your phone call more natural.

Lost of focus

If your screen reader loses focus on the NGT Lite conversation window use Alt + Tab to return to the conversation window.
