The Next Generation Text Service is still very new and we're continuing to develop and improve it over the coming months. As such, we'll be adding to this page and others on the site as we go. So make sure to visit regularly and check for updates.

Answering a call

If the caller dials 18000 the call is handled as a 999 call and presented to you in the same way as a 999 call. More information to follow...

Calling the caller back

If the caller gives you a TextNumber (starting with 0330 670... or 0777 789...) you can simply dial that number and text relay will automatically connected into the call. More information to follow...

When using a telephone

  • Direct or via Relay dial 18002 + phone number or dial 0330 670... or dial 0777 789...
  • To use Relay Assist dial 0870 240 5152 (calls to this number cost 1p per minute plus your phone company's Access Charge)
  • From abroad dial +44151 494 2022
  • For the NGT Helpdesk dial 0800 7311 888

Text relay

The text relay assistant with provide text-to-voice and voice-to-text translation. They have no control over the call and simply relay the conversation between you and the caller.


If a text-user needs to contact the emergency services they can send an SMS message to 999 or 112. This SMS is converted to a standard 999 call with a text relay assistant connected. More information to follow...
