Next Generation Text user guide

This is guide is based on how you want to use the NGT Service.

What's a TextNumber?

A TextNumber is a unique phone number that automatically routes calls via the NGT Service. TextNumbers starting 03306... are used to call your home or office phone, while TextNumbers starting 07777... are used to call your mobile.

The benefit of a TextNumber is that the network knows it's an NGT call without needing the 18002 prefix. Your callers simply dial the TextNumber you give them. The 18002 prefix still works and your callers can continue using it as they did before. TextNumbers are designed to make it easier for businesses such as your bank, gas or electricity supplier to call you. However TextNumbers can also be used by your friends and family.

When someone uses a TextNumber to call you, it will connect via NGT and bring in text relay if needed. You can answer the call using either a textphone or the NGT Lite app.

How do I get a TextNumber?

It's easy. To associate a TextNumber with your home, office or mobile number you just need to make a call from your phone.

Important: TextNumbers work with ordinary home and office phone lines, and mobiles. They won't work with business systems that display a switchboard number rather than an individual extension/phone number.

Using NGT Lite to get a TextNumber

  • Using NGT Lite and your phone make a call to 0800 500 888, you can dial the number with or without the 18001 prefix
  • You'll see the message below:

  • The TextNumber that's associated with your phone number will be displayed on your ScreenPhone display
  • You can now hang-up the call

It will take only a few minutes for the TextNumber to be fully working.

If you forget the TextNumber, repeat the steps above to see the TextNumber.

Please note: If you use both NGT Lite and a textphone or ScreenPhone you only need to get a TextNumber once using either NGT Lite or your textphone or ScreenPhone.

What phone number is shown to the person you're calling?

When you've associated a TextNumber with your phone number the person you're calling through NGT will see your TextNumber. If they return your call it's the TextNumber they'll dial and the call will route through NGT.

Withholding a TextNumber

If you withhold your standard phone number the associated TextNumber will be withheld. When you withhold a phone number it means the person you're calling can't see your phone number on their phone's display.

There are two ways to withhold phone numbers

  • Permanently - by contacting your telephone service provider
  • Per call - by dialling 141 18001 followed by the number you're calling

Putting a TextNumber in The Phone Book

TextNumbers will not automatically appear in the Phone Book. BT Phonebooks can add the TextNumber to your entry. If you don't currently have an entry in the Phone Book you need to contact your telephone service provider.

We are working on the procedure to put a TextNumber in The Phone Book. Information will be added when this service is launched.

Cold calling

As a text-user you might have not had to deal with cold callers in the past. Cold callers are people who make unwanted calls to sell things like insurance, or get you to swap your electricity supplier. Unfortunately by making it easier to call you there is the possibility that you could get cold calls, and putting a TextNumber in The Phone Book could make cold calls more likely.

Making a call using a TextNumber

The person calling you simply dials the TextNumber you give them without the 18002 prefix.

Call charges

Callers dialling TextNumbers are charged at their telephone provider's standard rate for 03 or 07 numbers.

Can a caller still use the 18002 prefix?

Yes the 18002 prefix still works. After you have a TextNumber associated with your phone number callers can still dial 18002 followed by your phone number.

Answering a call when a TextNumber has been dialled

When you answer a call it doesn't matter if a TextNumber was dialled or the 18002 prefix was used the text relay will be connected automatically if needed.

If someone else answers the phone and they don't use a textphone or the NGT Lite they will be able to speak to the caller.

Sending an SMS message to a TextNumber

We're working on the ability to forward SMS text messages sent to the TextNumber that's associated with your mobile phone. Unfortunately this is not ready yet, please watch the news on this website for further information.

Important: If you reply to an SMS text message sent to a TextNumber your reply will come direct from your mobile phone number and display your mobile number.

Mobile number or TextNumbers?

When you associate a TextNumber with your mobile phone you'll have two phone numbers, which should you use and when?

  • If you want friends, family or colleagues to send you SMS text messages or call your mobile you should give them your mobile phone number, telling them to use the 18002 prefix. We suggest that you tell people to put both your mobile phone number and the associated TextNumber in their mobile phone's contact list.
  • TextNumbers are intended for businesses who are going to call you or send you an occasional SMS text message such as a postal delivery confirmation. (See: Sending an SMS message to a TextNumber above)

TextNumber hints and tips

You only need to link your phone number to a TextNumber once

If you want to set up a TextNumber and you use both a textphone and NGT Lite you only need to set the TextNumber up once using either the textphone or NGT Lite, you don't need to set up the TextNumber on both devices.

Can I redirect my TextNumber to my standard telephone line?

The TextNumber is already linked to your phone number. You don't need to do anything else.

Can I divert a telephone line to a TextNumber?

No, the phone network will only let you divert a telephone line to another telephone line or a mobile.

However if you have a TextNumber associated with your home telephone line and you divert your home telephone line to your mobile a call to the TextNumber will be diverted to your mobile. You can then answer the call using NGT Lite on your mobile. For this to work NGT Lite on your mobile has to be linked to your home telephone number. Please note your home phone provider might charge for the diverted call.

Can I still withhold my TextNumber if I don't want people to see it?

Yes, if you withhold your phone number the TextNumber is withheld as well.

Can people calling me still use 18002 and my standard number if they want to or will they have to use my TextNumber if I have one?

Yes, the 18002 prefix will continue to work as it does for Text Relay. The person calling you might decide to continue using the 18002 prefix because they will get the text rebate on the call charge.

Can people dial a TextNumber from overseas?

Unfortunately there's not a simple answer to this. If someone is abroad and they make a phone call the local phone network controls what can and can't be dialled. This means that someone dialling the TextNumber for your fixed line e.g. +44330670... might work, however if they dial the TextNumber for your mobile e.g. +44777789... this should work.

How do I get a TextNumber?

Using the phone or mobile you want to associate with a TextNumber you simply make a call to the NGT Helpdesk and select option 2 and an automated system will give you a TextNumber. Click here for more information about TextNumbers.

If someone rings me using my TextNumber, can a hearing member of my family answer the call?

Yes, TextNumbers work in the same way as calls made using 18002 prefix.

What happens if someone sends an SMS text to an 07 TextNumber, will I receive the text?

Yes, NGT will forward SMS messages to the mobile phone that's associated with the TextNumber. However this facility has not yet been launched, please watch the news on this website for the launch announcement.

What is a TextNumber?

A TextNumber is a unique 11 digit NGT access codes that can be used as an alternative to the 18002 prefix. Click here for more information about TextNumbers.

When I call people will they see my TextNumber or my standard telephone number if they have caller display on their phone?

If they have a Caller Display unit they will see the TextNumber. If they call 1471 they will hear the TextNumber. They can simply return your call and will automatically connect through NGT with relay if needed.

Why can't I have a Text Number that mirrors my geographic location?

Ofcom allocates numbers in minimum number blocks of 10,000. Using geographic numbers for the NGT TextNumber service would mean many would never be used and might cause a shortage of numbers in areas where there isn't much availability. Using 03 numbers ensures the caller will be billed for a call to a geographic number, the call will be free if their telephone service provider includes these calls in their package.

Will my TextNumber appear in the phone book?

TextNumbers will not automatically appear in the Phone Book. BT Phonebooks can add the TextNumber to your entry. If you don't currently have an entry in the Phone Book you need to contact your telephone service provider. Click here for more information about TextNumbers and The Phone Book.
