Can I use the emergencySMS service in Northern Ireland?

Yes, the emergencySMS service covers the UK i.e. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Checking your mobile phone is registered

The emergencySMS service connects you direct to 999, please don't send a test SMS message to check your phone is registered. If you want to make sure you mobile phone is registered send "register" in an SMS message to 999. The emergencySMS service will reply with an SMS message saying your phone is already registered, or if the phone isn't registered the registration process with start.

Can I send an MMS message to the emergencySMS service?

The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) doesn’t have a connection to the emergencySMS service.

Some mobile phones convert SMS messages in to MMS, however they only do so when you type over 480 characters which is the equivalent to four SMS text messages. We always encourage people to keep their messages short to avoid delays. If the emergency service needs more information they will ask for it during the SMS conversation they have with you.


Can I make an emergency call using NGT Lite?

Yes. You open NGT Lite and then dial 18000 on a phone that's associated with the App.

Do the emergency services know where I am?

Yes. An 18000 call uses the same location system as a 999. If you call from home the emergency services are given your home address from your telephone service provider. If you call from a mobile the emergency services get your location from the mobile network.
