What do I need to call a text-user?

To make calls using the Next Generation Text (NGT) Service you need a standard phone line or mobile phone. Please contact your phone provider to make sure your phone can make calls through the NGT Service. Click here for a list of phone service providers.

    • Windows XP or later
    • Linux
    • Intel based Mac
  • a connection to the internet using:
    • broadband
    • home or public Wi-Fi
    • 3G or 4G mobile internet dongle
  • Java 1.7 or later installed on the computer
  • the NGT Lite app

What do I need to use NGT Lite?

You need:

  • a UK phone line or mobile - click here for a list of phone service providers
  • an internet connection:
    • broadband
    • home or public Wi-Fi
    • 3G or 4G mobile internet
  • an internet connected device:
    • an Android smartphone or tablet running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or later
    • a computer with Java 1.7 or later installed - Windows XP or later, Linux, or Intel based Mac
    • an iPhone or iPad running iOS 6 or later
  • the NGT Lite app

Using NGT Lite with a smartphone

You can use your smartphone, Android or iPhone, with NGT in different ways:

  1. Home/Office - Using a smartphone a Wi-Fi connection or mobile internet to run NGT Lite and a separate telephone to make the phone call
  2. Out and about Wi-Fi - Using a smartphone with a public Wi-Fi connection ,e.g. in a coffee shop, to run NGT Lite and the same smartphone to make the phone call
  3. Out and about mobile internet - Using a smartphone with a mobile internet connection to run NGT Lite and the same smartphone to make the phone call (see: note below)

Important information: If you want to use the NGT App "Out and about mobile internet" you need to make sure that your mobile provider's network supports simultaneous voice and data. If it doesn't the NGT App will lose its connection to NGT when you make or answer a phone call.

Using NGT Lite with a tablet

You can use your tablet with NGT in different ways:

  1. Home/Office - Using a tablet with a Wi-Fi connection to run NGT Lite and a separate fixed or cordless telephone to make the phone call
  2. Out and about - Using a tablet with a public Wi-Fi connection to run NGT Lite and a mobile phone to make the phone call

Using NGT Lite with a computer

You can use your computer or laptop with NGT in different ways:

  1. Home/Office - Using a computer with a broadband internet connection or a laptop with a Wi-Fi connection to run NGT and a separate fixed or cordless telephone to make the phone call
  2. Out and about - Using a laptop with a public Wi-Fi connection to run NGT Lite and a mobile phone to make the phone call

The list below shows the Operating Systems that work with the NGT Lite app. The computer must have Java 1.7 or later installed before installing the NGT Lite app.

  • Linux
  • Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) or later
  • Windows XP or later

Using NGT Lite with other phones

Currently you need to have an Android device, iPad, iPhone, or computer to use NGT. We are looking at increasing the number of devices we support and will put information on this website when it's available.
