Making a call - NGT Lite on an Android phone

Before you make a call using NGT Lite, make sure you've linked your phone number to the app. You can find out how to do that by clicking on the Setting up link on the left of this page.

Important: If you use NGT Lite in a public place please make sure the volume is turned down on your phone otherwise the people around you might be able to hear what the person is saying to the relay assistant.

Making a 18001 call

  1. Open NGT Lite on your Android phone and check you have App connected icon at the top of the window. If it's App connected icon check you're connected to the internet.
  2. Switch to your phone's dialler and dial 18001 followed by the number of the person you're calling.
  3. Switch back to NGT Lite and you'll see the pop-up window below.

  4. The NGT Lite will show announcements such as NGT ring ring or NGT busy.
  5. When the call is answered, the NGT Service will connect to the NGT Relay if the other person is using a phone.

Making a NGT Assist call

If you need assistance making your call please use NGT Assist, this will connect you to a relay assistant before making your call.

  1. Open NGT Lite on your Android phone and check you have App connected icon at the top of the window. If it's App connected icon check you're connected to the internet.
  2. Switch to your phone's dialler and dial 0870 240 95 98 (calls to this number cost 1p per minute plus your phone company's Access Charge).
  3. Switch back to NGT Lite and you'll see the pop-up window below.

    Click Join
  4. The NGT Lite will display the message NGT Please type the number you want to call GA.
  5. Type the number you're calling using the phone's keyboard. At this point you aren't connected to a relay assistant, so it's important you type the number to call rather than speaking.
  6. You'll then see NGT Waiting for a free relay assistant, then Connected to Text Relay please wait.
  7. The relay assistant will then ask you for the name of the person you want to call and, once connected, you'll be able to start your conversation.

Making an emergency call

By making an 18000 call you be connected to the UK 999 service with a relay assistant connected into your call. This is exactly the same a dialling 999.

  1. Open NGT Lite on your Android phone and check you have App connected icon at the top of the window. If it's App connected icon check you're connected to the internet.
  2. Switch to your phone's dialler and dial 18000.
  3. Switch back to NGT Lite and you'll see the pop-up window below.

  4. The NGT Lite will display the message Emergency, which service? GA. At this point you will be connected to 999 and a relay assistant.
  5. You can speak directly to the 999 agent and tell them which service you need, then read any responses in NGT Lite conversation window. The 999 agent will then connect you to the right emergency service.

Making a call - NGT Lite on an iPhone

Your conversation - Speak & Hear

Simply use your phone as you usually do. If the other person is deaf and speaking to you you might need to make sure you're in a quiet environment without distractions.

Remember:

One of the benefits of NGT is that the text-user has both the voice and internet connection in parallel. This means that they might speak to or hear you while a relay assistant types or reads the conversation. If you're new to text relay the relay assistant will manage the flow of the conversation.

Hanging up a call - phone

At the end of a call simply hang up your phone.
